“Shadowing”

Aren’t quite sure if you know what you would like to do for a future career? You may sometimes think ‘Why do I have to learn this?’ while sitting in math class. Shadowing gives young people the opportunity to view the world and observe how classroom learning is translated in the working world. In addition, many professions sound good on paper, but some people find out they don’t like a particular job after they have invested a lot of time and money into it.

Many professionals, such as government officials, nurses, television news anchors, and veterinarians, offer a “shadowing” program where they allow you to follow them around for the day to see what their job really entails.

For more information about job shadowing, talk to your school guidance counselor. To learn more about “shadowing” opportunities at the UConn Health Center, contact Human Resources at 860-679-2523.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to discover and develop your interests in a certain area. Many organizations depend heavily on their volunteers to help them succeed. In addition to the inner feeling of satisfaction one often receives from this experience, volunteering also looks great on a job or college application.
